YOUR TRIP
~11 taps
  • Tap a contactless card or your phone on the OMNY reader at the turnstile. That’s it.
  • Fare cap: pay for 12 rides in any 7 days and the rest are free, so you’ll never pay more than $35 this week.
  • Use the same card or phone every time. A phone wallet and the physical card count as two different cards.
  • Switching lines inside a station is free. Subway ↔ local bus within 2 hours is free too.
  • Free all week: the Q70 LaGuardia Link bus and the Staten Island Ferry.
  • PATH is a separate system: $3.25 a ride (~12 rides ≈ $39 this trip). Tap a contactless card or phone at the PATH readers — OMNY isn’t accepted, and PATH rides don’t count toward the subway cap.

WHICH WAY? READING THE SIGNS

Uptown & The Bronx
= north · Upper Manhattan, Bronx, often Queens
Downtown & Brooklyn
= south · Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn
  • Check the line and the direction before you tap — some stations have separate uptown and downtown entrances with no free crossover inside.
  • Express trains skip stops; locals stop everywhere. In Manhattan: 2 3 run express beside the local 1 · 4 5 beside the 6 · A beside C E · B D beside F M · N Q beside R W.
  • Station globes: green = entrance open 24/7 · red = exit only or limited hours.
  • Announcements can be hard to hear — watch the station names on the platform walls.

STATIONS YOU’LL USE MOST

NEW SINCE DEC 2025 · THE F/M SWAP

FM

Weekdays, ~6 AM–9:30 PM: the F runs through 5 Av/53 St and Lexington Av/53 St; the M serves 57 St, Lexington Av/63 St and Roosevelt Island.

Nights & weekends: the F goes back to 63 St and Roosevelt Island, and the M doesn’t run to Queens.

Nothing in your plan depends on these stations — it only matters if you improvise.

SAFE & COMFY

  • Late at night, ride in the conductor’s car — the middle of the train. Look for the black-and-white striped board hanging over the platform.
  • An empty car on a crowded train usually has a reason. Pick another.
  • Stand back from the platform edge. Let people off before you board. Take your backpack off in crowds.
  • Keep your phone out of sight when you’re standing by the doors.
  • Emergency: 911. Help points (blue lights) and station agents are in most stations.

CHECK BEFORE YOU RIDE

Nights and weekends bring planned track work that can reroute trains. Before each ride, glance at live directions in Google Maps or the official MTA app, and read the yellow and white service posters in the station.
